Crazy Crab Coming to Clark?

$

The restaurant space vacated by Aodoke Asian Bistro last year (4650 North Clark) appears to be getting a new tenant. Earlier this week, a reader saw new furniture and fixtures going into the space. In mid-March, an on-site liquor license was applied for under the name Crazy Crab.

We wish this new restaurant success at what has been a problematic location for previous tenants. Hopefully the new signage and parking lot, as well as the presence of Bella 'Mbriana, will help entice diners to Crazy Crab.

We have reached out to Ald. Pawar's office to see if they might more information, which we will pass along to you.

Attempted Robbery Near Goudy School Turns Fatal When Victim Shoots Robber

$

Last night readers reported hearing shots fired near Winthrop & Winona at 11:30pm, with the police scanner reporting that a man had been shot in the leg and shoulder. This morning the news broke that the man had died.

But this isn't the all-too-common Uptown gang-versus-gang nonsense. According to eyewitnesses and news reports this morning, it was an attempted robbery in which the victims handed over their wallets and phones, but balked when the robber tried to take the car from which they were unloading furniture. One of the would-be victims had a gun and used it.

An eyewitness sent in this account:
"At 11 25PM March 31st... I pulled into my parking spot. My neighbor and his friend were unloading a nightstand from his car and carrying it inside his place. I asked if they needed help. They said no, so I went inside and sat down to look at some mail.

At 11 30 PM I heard about 13 gunshots. I call 911. I call and text my neighbor. No response. I get worried... I go out front. Talk to another neighbor... She said she thought she saw our neighbor in handcuffs....

Long story short... My neighbor has a gun and a conceal and carry permit/license. It turns out he was robbed... I heard on my police scanner app... He was robbed by a known gang member. He shot the man in the back right shoulder... The man's condition was serious...

Here are pics of the scene at 230 am April 1. The location is Winona near Winthrop."
According to the Sun-Times, "The 28-year-old was taken Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he later died. The Cook County medical examiner’s office withheld his name Friday morning pending notification of his family. Police said he had been on parole for a past armed robbery conviction."

UU Note: The news outlets are all saying that this happened around 10:30pm. However, the readers who contacted us all reported it happening at 11:30pm. We're going with our readers on the timing.

Update: Ald. Osterman updated in his weekly newsletter:  "Last night our community was affected by the violence rippling through the city. Around 10:30 pm, a 28-year-old man with a criminal background attempted an armed robbery of a local resident at the intersection of Winona and Winthrop. In the course of the robbery, the resident defended himself, shooting the man, who died later at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The police are reviewing surveillance video and fully investigating this shooting death. I will have more information about the incident next week. If you have any information about this case, please contact Area North Detectives at 312-744-5277 or Marko Zaric in my office at Marko@48thward.org or 773-784-5277."

Update: The would-be robber has been identified as William George, and the Sun-Times confirms that no charges will be brought against the citizen who shot him.

Majestic Men's Store Building To Rise Again

Several readers wrote in to ask about recent rumors they had heard about the H.W. Rubloff building, better known as the Majestic Men's Store building. There's scuttlebutt going around that due to budget constraints the building, which stood at 4701 North Broadway (corner of Leland), will not be rebuilt, as was promised when it was dismantled in 2014 to make way for Wilson L construction.

We are happy to report that those rumors are baseless, according to the CTA. The terra cotta facade of the building will be back, better than ever after a cleaning and restoration. It will surround support pillars for the new L.

The CTA's Media Relations Department responded to our email, saying:
"During the preconstruction phase of the Wilson project (October 2014 – Spring 2015), crews deconstructed the Majestic Men’s Wear building. The terra cotta façade of the Majestic store will be restored in a future phase when the project nears completion. The eventual restoration of the façade has been and will continue to be part of the historic Wilson Station Reconstruction Project.

For more info on the project you can check out our website here: http://www.transitchicago.com/wilson/"

An update on the community meeting held this past week on the proposed redevelopment of 5050 Broadway and the buildings surrounding it, from Ald. Osterman's weekly newsletter:
"On Monday night, we had a positive community meeting about Cedar Street's planned redevelopment of the former Aon building, 5050 N. Broadway, and nearby properties.

This exciting project, a mixed-use retail/multifamily development, will have 710 rental units, including 107 units (15 percent) that will qualify as affordable housing, as well as a parking garage and attractively designed commercial space. (Click here for an illustrated outline of the entire project.)

We will follow up with another community meeting in late April or early May. In the meantime, please feel free to send any feedback or questions about this development to info@cedarst.com."
UU Note: This project involves properties in both the 47th and 48th Wards, with Broadway being the ward boundary.

Construction on Argyle is back after a winter break. The completion of Chicago's first shared street should take place by late July. Ald. Osterman's office has put out the flyer above with the projected construction timeline. Here's the current phase:
"Now - Late April. Construction of the final parkway portion of Argyle on the south side between Kenmore and Sheridan. No parking within these limits. Existing sidewalk will be removed and temporary ramps will be installed (conditions will be similar to last summer/fall’s construction)."
Here's an overview of the project.

A reminder that the CAPS meeting for Beat 1915 will take place on Thursday, April 7th, at 6:30pm at The Shift, 4101 North Broadway. The topic will be "General Theft" and it's a timely one, as there was a mugging at gunpoint this weekend near Marine Drive and Junior Terrace, in which a woman walking down the street was held up by at least two assailants who were driving by in a van and stopped to accost her. This happened at 11am. If you are concerned about street crimes like this, please attend this meeting and hear what the police have to say.

Beat 1915 is bordered by Clark, Irving Park, the lake, and Montrose.

    Construction/Closures Update

Here's what's up with the area under construction for the Wilson L:
    • Wilson will be closed to vehicular traffic (but open to pedestrian traffic) between 9am and 4pm Monday and Tuesday. This is a closure for the CTA work to continue. Phase II -- taking down and replacing the old metal tracks that date back to 1907 -- is now fully underway, and is scheduled to take six months, much shorter than the replacement and demolition of the old concrete tracks that ran parallel to the metal ones.
    • The City's Department of Water Management completed its months-long project on the 4600 block of Broadway at the end of March, replacing century-old sewers and pipes under the street. Leland at Broadway was actually open for a day (photographic proof above).
    • Now it's ComEd's turn to do its thing. Leland and Broadway is once again blocked off, and the northbound lanes on the 4600 block of Broadway remain closed. We don't know how long it will take ComEd to complete its work, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out more.
    • On a positive note, CTA finished its overnight work early last week, so the southbound lanes on Broadway were open Friday, a day sooner than predicted.
As always, remember that the locally owned businesses along Broadway and Wilson especially need your support at this time. Please remember to patronize them and help them stay afloat during this long construction period. A list of the shops and addresses is here.

Man Shot On Buena Avenue This Morning

Around 10:30 this morning, six shots were fired on the 900 block of Buena, in what police are telling neighbors was a gang-related shooting. A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest on the block between Sheridan and Broadway.

As of 11:45, we are getting reports that the street is blocked off, the police are picking up bullet casings, and media are present. The man was taken to Illinois Masonic and is undergoing surgery for his injuries, which are very critical.

According to the Crime In Wrigleyville blog, "Investigators believe that images of the offenders were captured on a Chicago police pod camera. A covert Chicago police vehicle in the area also saw the suspected offenders running from the scene, a source said."

We will update as more information becomes available.

Update:The Sun-Times has the story up.

Update: Ald Cappleman released a statement. "According to the Chicago Police Department, at approximately 10:30am today, there was young man shot on the 900 block of West Buena Avenue. The victim was approached by two offenders and was shot in the chest. Police say he was taken immediately to Illinois Masonic Hospital where he is undergoing surgery and remains in critical condition. Chicago Police detectives are working with neighbors and nearby witnesses to try and gather accounts and surveillance footage. Police have stated that the victim was most likely known and targeted by the shooter.  If you have any information regarding this incident, please call the 19th Police District CAPS office at 312-744-0064.

I invite you to attend the public safety meeting this Thursday, April 7th at 6:30PM at the The Shift at 4101 N. Broadway. I encourage you to attend to be a part of the discussion surrounding this incident and overall safety in our neighborhood. I will continue to work with police and neighbors to do everything we can to keep our streets safe. We need your help in continuing to improve public safety in our community."

The original proposal was amended to shorten the hours of operation of the cafe, from midnight to 11pm from Sunday through Thursday. The hours approved by the vote are:
    • Sunday-Thursday 8am-11pm
    • Friday-Saturday 8am-midnight
The ultimate decision about whether or not to approve the cafe is up to Ald. Pawar.

No Burning Daylight; New Montrose Retail Project Gets Underway

On Monday, a new construction permit was issued by city for 918 West Montrose, the future home of Ross Dress For Less and another to-be-announced retail store. (A demo permit had previously been issued.)

With that in place, no time was wasted and the former Dearborn Wholesale Grocers building started coming down today.

It seems like it took forever, but it was only nine months ago that Ross announced its intention to open on Montrose. Not a bad time frame for plowing through Chicago's red tape and waiting for decent weather. We look forward to watching the construction take place.
